I’m suppose to change my internet provider and when I read what others offer I see that some are making some extra-offers by promising public IPs. Can you tell me what the difference between public and private IP addresses is? I have always thought that it is ok to have a private address, but now I realize that it may be better to have a public one.

I don’t know whether you have understand well what they say, but I suppose that you are confused because there are tow different couples – static and dynamic IP addresses and the second group is private and public IP addresses. Those private addresses are used for some private networks and there are couple of ranges from which those addresses are given. I think that when you have a private address that is not good for using P2P programs because they perceive you as if you were from one big firewall. So I don’t know actually why you would want to have a private address. Public addresses are regular IP addresses which can be seen from the internet.
