I'm trying to get to the System Configuration Utility so that I can change some startup settings that have been screwing up my firewall, but turns out I can't, for some reason. When I enter "msconfig" at the Run panel, I get the "performed illegal operation, shutting down now" error message every time. I have no idea what's causing this. Is there some other way I could access this utility?

Well, I suppose there's an exe file in the Windows/System folder, but I don't think it would make much difference if you did it that way. My guess would be some sort of malware is interfering with it, probably by accident. Run a scan or two, see if anything comes up. If that's not it, maybe you can reinstall some Windows component and see if msconfig "recovers" after that?
