I've never had any OS other than Windows (98, 2K, and now XP), but I've always wanted to give Linux a try… It's just that, I'm sort of scared – I heard installing Linux over an existing Windows installation can cause damage to the hard drive, is that true? Should I then get a secondary hard disk and install there? Or will partitioning do the trick?

I never heard of such a thing happening, Linux damaging your HDD… what can happen is having your OS installations screwed up, though even that's not much of a risk if you do it right. But physical damage to the hardware, no. Just go ahead and install Linux to the same HDD you have Windoze on; it should recognize the existing installation and offer to set up a dual boot, a prompt to choose which OS you want to boot up each time the system is started.
