What is derfragmentation?

It’s a process of reorganizing and rewriting files so that they occupy one large continuous area on your hard disk rather than several smaller areas.

If you use Microsoft Windows XP you already have a defragmentation software installed. Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean Win XP defragmentator is a great software and that you don’t need another, professional one, because you do.

Win XP defragmentator might be good, but if you want to avoid all the bad things stated below you should consider buying a better one.

What's wrong with the disk defragmenter that comes with windows?

It shows the estimated disk condition after the defragmentation as being the same as the start, which is no use at the start.

It takes an age and slows the PC down (which one puts up with because after all one is defragmenting the disk) but does seem overly intrusive.

When it's finished you look at the result and are amazed to find it hasn't bothered to collect all the free space in one place.

Also it has failed to defragment some of the files so when you analyze it again it suggests the disk needs defragmenting again.

Not sure if I caught everything but I think that's the main bits.  It's ok, it does a job, but it hardly achieves a top quality service.

What is the best defragmentation software?

The competition is heavy but the users have picked up the 3 best solutions:

  1. Diskeeper
  2. Perfect Disk
  3. O&O

Diskeeper

Diskeeper is unlike any other product on the market today. Now, more than ever, it is important to have a system that is reliable and performs at the peak of its ability.

Fragmented hard drives drain critical system resources and compromise almost every aspect of daily computer use, leading to longer load times, persistent lags and costly crashes. Diskeeper shifts your system into high gear, ensuring that all your programs are running at peak performance.

Remember how your PC or laptop ran when it was new? Diskeeper has been designed to keep your system faster than new, making it the ideal choice for your home. Simply install it and your computer will run faster and more reliably than it ever has before.

Perfect Disk

Built for the largest and most fragmented disk drives, PerfectDisk provides the most comprehensive solution for defragmentation by optimizing virtually every file on the system, including all metadata, paging files, and directories.

Some features:

- PerfectDisk now provides the ability to automatically perform defragmentation only when your system is idle.

- PerfectDisk has been enhanced to run even faster during SMARTPlacement defragmentation passes.

- PerfectDisk's Single File Defrag has been replaced with Selected Files Defrag, giving users the ability to select multiple files to defragment, rather than the entire drive.

- A new graphical view of how fragmented your drive is.

- PerfectDisk now provides the estimated time of day when a defrag run will complete.

And many others features.

O&O

Simply, quickly, and securely, you can get the maximum performance out of your expensive hardware investments - and all this with only a tiny investment of time and energy!

Some features:

- Automatic and self-adjusting defragmentation in the background (O&O OneButtonDefrag)

- Select from different profiles for the automatic defragmentation of PCs and servers

- Expanded job scheduling for custom strategies for automatic defragmentation

- Status monitor and control direct from the Task Tray

- Completely overhauled interface for increased usability

- Expanded O&O Defrag Wizard for quick configuration

- O&O ActivityGuard Pro for even less system loads

- Five unique defragmentation methods for different optimization strategies

- Support for all current Windows operating systems in 32- and 64-bit

And many more.

      Image verification code explanation
You must type the numbers and letters you see in a picture to confirm that a person, rather than an automated program, is trying to access the page. This requirement helps prevent automated programs from misusing our services. In some instances you might mistakenly type an incorrect character. When this happens you will be asked to type a new set of characters.

Look at the numbers and letters in the picture, and then type them in the confirmation code box below.

If you can't read one or more of the letters or numbers, do one of the following:

Click here to refresh the page and get a new picture (notice: all data filled in prior to page refresh will be lost).

      Note:
The letters are CASE SENSITIVE and there are no ZEROs. Do not type spaces between the numbers and letters.
