H-Desk.com Forum Index -> General -> Off-topic help

Here is an overview of the most popular downloading software for torrent file sharing of 2008.

First program that is the number 1 currently, according to the majority of users, is µTorrent.

1) µTorrent

µTorrent is the most popular torrent tool today, known as both “u-torrent” and “micro torrent”. It has all the functions that torrent downloader will ever need, and it requires only 1 MB of HDD space. Also, µTorrent has all the downloading and seeding performance of other torrent clients, but with minimal impact to the rest of your computer’s speed.

Flaws:
If not properly configured, µTorrent can suck away all your bandwidth and paralyze other net-activities.

Features:

  • Multiple simultaneous downloads
  • Smart bandwidth usage
  • File level priorities
  • Configurable bandwidth scheduling
  • Global and per-torrent speed limiting
  • Quickly resumes interrupted transfers
  • UPnP support (WinXP only)
  • Supports popular protocol extensions
  • Trackerless support (Mainline DHT)
  • Localized to different languages
  • Typical memory use less than 6 MB
  • Incredibly small: 105 KB

2) BitComet

BitComet is very good torrent client. Its strength is in fact that it’s advertised by most tracker sites.

Flaws:
Despite being advertised, it’s losing popularity to µTorrent.

Features:

  • Intelligent Connection Optimize
  • Intelligent Rate Control, optimize the upload
  • Intelligent Disk Cache, decrease the potential damage
  • Intelligent Disk Allocating, no long-time disk allocation
  • Intelligent Hash Scan, no time-consuming scanning when seeding
  • Firewall and NAT Traversal
  • Auto config ICF (Internet Connection Firewall)
  • Auto config port mapping in router

3) BitLord

BitLord is very popular tool that has built-in torrent search engine. With this software you may never need to use a torrent search web site ever again.
Flaws: Some trackers might try to block BitLord for some reasons.

Features:

  • Automatic optimization for different connections.
  • Automatic optimization of uploads to achieve the max download
  • Reduces fragmentation on the drive.
  • Eliminates the time-consuming hashing when seeding / resume.
  • Allows some firewalled or “NAT’d” users to connect to each other.
  • Compliant with XP’s restrictions on the TCP stack by SP2.
  • Block IP’s temporarily or permanently.
  • All downloads are received through a single port.
  • No manual ICS or ICF configuration required.
  • Automatically configures UPnP compatible routers
  • Can find peers from more than one source.
  • Supports the UTF-8 character set.
  • Automatically checks for new versions.
  • Over 19 languages supported.
  • Support for eDonkey (Beta version only)

4) Azureus

Azureus is Java language client. It was considered as “king” of the torrent programs until uTorrent software came along and dethroned it.

Flaws: The biggest problem with Azureus is that it is a memory and performance hog., especially for users which have less amount of RAM or like to run many background processes while downloading.

Features:

  • Manual peer upload blocking (when seeding) and kick-banning
  • Control added to not cache small files
  • Advanced network settings: MTU, SO_RCVBUF, SO_SNDBUF, IPTOS
  • Plugin support for installing and uninstalling plugins
  • Client identification plugin interface
  • Separate protocol payload and overhead stats
  • Network selection support (public, i2p, tor)

5) ABC

ABC is another very popular Torrent client nowadays. It supports Multiple downloads in a single window and Queuing system with priority.

Other features include:

  • Ability to customize the information ABC displays
  • Supporting pause, stop, resume, queue, remove operations
  • Minimize to Taskbar (and/or system tray)
  • Displaying torrent details
  • Supporting advanced settings from BitTornado

Besides these Top 5 programs, another two clients should be mentioned.

First is TurboBT download Client Tool that is very easy to use and its GUI looks great.
Also, very rich in features that include add download mission dialog, fully customizable download, port and rate setting, dynamic change speed setting, etc.

Second is of course the Original BitTorrent Client authored by Bram Cohen.
It has no fancy GUI, but downloads are quick. This client is mostly recommended for programmer types and Macintosh users.

That would be brief (and subjective) list. However, popular vote from other sites and from other users has been included to complete this list of Top Torrent Clients.
