I downloaded some multimedia files from the Internet. They were in wav format. When I want them to play in Winamp, it cannot do that. Then I try to play them in Windows media player. However, Windows media player report a Winsock error and ask for authentification. What is wrong? Is winsock issues in XP revisited?

I don't know about winsock but I don't think that it is causing your problem. You should try to download those files once again and then try to play them one more time. Those files may be damaged in the process of downloading. Try to play them in some DivX player like MV2 player or on the other computer at some friend to see do you maybe need some codec. If that will not help then you probably downloaded some files that are property of somebody else. That person now wants you to pay to see those files. Because of that, those files are encrypted and you cannot see them until you pay to its owner. I wouldn't do that if you don't know somebody that already works with that owner.
