I tried to upgrade my XP pro with a new build of Vista but I get the error message saying: ‘Install Failure - cannot update boot configuration’. Why is this happening? I have a new Dell computer ( I bought it last month) and I have had no problems with it before this. I’d really appreciate any kind of help!

I’ve heard about this before – you’re deffinitely not alone in this. I did a little research and found that the following helped in most cases but unfortunately not all of them. I hope it helps you. You should first run regedit and open
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. In there you should confirm that UpperFilters is empty and UpperFilters.bak is present. Next, rename UpperFilters.bak to UpperFilters and then reboot and try upgrading. It should work OK now.
