WinXP freezes at splash screen

I was trying to help a friend with his computer problem but was unable. His PC freezes at WinXP splash screen and always the blue bar scrolls to a different point. We’ve tried booting more than 30 times in a row. Prior to this, his PC has been working fine, had regular virus checking and defragmentation. What can I do to fix this? I’m not some expert on computers but I am more experienced than my friend is and now I feel a bit embarrassed since I didn’t do anything.

You didn’t say what have you tried so far except for rebooting it 30 times in a row…which is probably not good for your friends machine. Have you tried entering the ‘safe mode’? If you make it, maybe you might find out what the problem is from there. It might be that something is wrong with the hard drive. Even the small fluctuations in power supply sometimes destroy the hd. It might be that the power supply isn’t working write. You should check that out also.
