I’m a complete dummy! I plan to subscribe for some kind of broadband internet and I’ve been reading about technical possibilities and performances of various technologies, but I can seem to understand the difference between ADSL and DSL. Is there any difference after all? I tend to consider those two to be very similar and I put it in the same group.

You are not that far from the truth. As I know DSL is actually ‘digital subscriber line’ and ADSL which means ‘asymmetric digital subscriber line’ actually belongs to this same group. So DSL refers to the whole family of technologies used for digital data transfer via telephone lines. ADSL is the most popular and widespread kind of DSL. The point is that there is this one telephone line split into two and lower frequencies are used for ordinary telephone calls which those remaining higher frequencies are used for the internet communications. In ADSL, the speed of the downloaded or received data is higher than those of the uploaded or sent. In SDSL, those two speeds, upload and download, are the same.
