Hello there. I am newbie for Linux and was sniffing around trough xorg.conf, after a hard work on getting some things done with Slackware. Now, my 3D acceleration seems to work with half of strength. Movies are great, I got subtitles and everything, but no matter which 3D game I start, its running like slide show. Tux racer or something like that for example. I am using ati radeon 9600 pro, by the way. I saw some sections under xorg, for which I dont know what they do.
-Modes,
-Server Layout,
-Device
I would appreciate, any help. Thanks.

| Jeez, man. You picked up Slackware as a newbie? Are you a Masochist? Just kidding. Slackware is a old style, text-based configurable distro. Very stable when you set all things up, but youll need a lot more time than you think to do all things set ok, as a newbie. Anyway, MODES section are somehow connected to a monitor layouts. But in some cases, because of built-in VESA drivers, these sections arent so much important for your problem. SERVER LAYOUT section is responsible for more than one display. For example, if you have TV connected. DEVICE section is responsible for recognizing some (not all) driver-independant entries. And believe me, some things about good old Slack, nobody knows. It is very hard to install ATI drivers for it. You can download them for Linux from Atis website, but only Suse, Fedora Core and Mandriva are supported. Which is my recommendation for you ( any of these distro's) as a more or less advanced user. |
