Shall I turn modem off when there is a storm with lightening? I have heard that a modem should be switched off when there is lighting. Many people practice that, because they say the hardware can be damaged if the lightning strikes nearby, or that it also can attract lightning. But many other don’t practice such a behavior, and think of it as a stupidity.
I used to always turn it off when the storm is coming. I say used to because I practiced such a behavior only while I was using dial up connection. Not only modem, I used to switch off the entire PC until I heard the last lightning. I practiced it also when I used DSL modem, because it also uses the phone line. But since I switched to cable I was advised never to unplug my modem, so I somehow quit that habit. I do not really know that if that lightening and modem thing has something to do with telephone line or not, but I somehow linked it in my head that way, and I just don’t think about it anymore.
