I need explanation of Viral Marketing

I have a PC for a couple of years now and I have been using the internet ever since but I must admit that there are certain things about which I have never heard before though they have been existing and are popular in the internet culture. One of them is viral marketing. Can you explain the meaning of this term?

I have been acquainted with this phenomenon recently and I must admit that the ‘viral’ part of the phrase seemed like something malicious and spam-like. But apparently this is an area of marketing which has positive effects and which is very efficient in spreading certain ideas and concepts. Still, viral marketing uses the same scheme as malicious self-replicating viruses and spyware, and I guess that that is why the name sounds like that. There are many examples of viral marketing nowadays and almost all of them reach the aim and that is promoting of a certain brand or an idea. Viral marketing can be pretty creative and innovative because people have very colorful imagination which can be really powerful in this area of marketing.
