I have boot problems with my computer. I have a computer for last three years and I never had any bigger problems. It has Windows 98 on it and it is not vulnerable on virus attacks. However, last week while I was on the Internet my computer just shut down. When I restart it, it reports kernel mode problem and will not run. For what is kernel mode responsible?

Kernel is an engine of your operating system and if it is damaged you will have to reinstall operating system from the beginning. Windows 98 has much less possibilities that Windows XP, but, as you said, it is much less vulnerable for virus attacks. That is why many users are still using it. If your computer shuts, while working, I do not think that is because of virus attacks from the Internet. Power failure or processor overheating is much more possible solutions for that mystery. If your machine will not start after that, you should restore the backup copy of your register. First, break your Windows 98 boot by pressing F8 key several times and then choose Command prompt mode. When the prompt shows, type next line: scanreg /restore and press enter. After that, choose the right registry copy and restart your machine once again.
