As I understand, Windows XP isn't "overlayed" on top of DOS like its predecessors were, correct? If that is so, and the so called "MS-DOS Prompt" application is just an emulator of sorts, then how is it possible that I saw a bunch of old games being played over on a girlfriend's friend's computer running XP? When I tried playing some of the oldies on my own machine, I couldn't. I'm missing something here, aren't I?

Well, as I understand XP should be able to, as you say, emulate DOS for certain DOS-based applications. If it's not working out for any of your old games, maybe you should try googling out an actual emulator program that was made to do exactly what you want. Also, as sort of a last resort, you could get DOS on a floppy, boot from that, and run the games.
