I had some video card driver issues (ATI, wouldn't you know it), so I tried going into safe mode to fix it all up … but it turns out I can't. I used to be able to enter it, I would just press F8 to get to the little menu where I could choose how to boot, but now if I press F8 once nothing happens, and if I press and hold it it tries to boot normally and then freezes, and I have to restart. I can't use normal mode until I've sorted out the drivers. I tried running a repair install off the Win XP CD, but I can't do it – it still tries to boot off the HD and I can't get it to boot from the CD! What's going on here, and how do I make things right?

Well, the easy thing first – to boot off a CD drive, you'll need to enter the BIOS first and set the booting order so that the machine will look for a bootable CD first, before looking for a bootable HDD. Now, one to the main course – I remember a friend of mind with a similar issue; in his case, it was a keyboard with dual-function "F" keys, so he had to press "F-Lock" or something like that to make it accept an F8 command. It's also possible that your keyboard is just malfunctioning because it needs some drivers loaded (which can't be done before it gets to the OS loading phase). You could just try using a different keyboard.
