This is completely insane. I can not access My Documents folder. Windows asks me to enter username and password and then gives me an error message saying My Documents is not accessible. Access is denied.. I do not understand. I have installed this Windows XP and I have not changed my user name and password for ages. I would really appreciate any suggestions.

I can bet that you have moved My Documents folder on another partition or another hard drive. When you do this prior to reinstalling Windows XP (clean install not included in this) this problem will, most certainly, occur. You have to turn off Simple File Sharing and take full control of that folder. Open my computer, go to Tools menu, click on Folder Options and then on View tab. Find Advanced settings and uncheck Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended) check box. Now right click on My Documents folder, click on Sharing and Security and adjust privileges.
